The first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, Admiral Ibrahim Ogohi (retired), has died.

The news was confirmed by Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, in a statement released early Sunday morning.

Admiral Ogohi reportedly passed away in Abuja in the early hours of June 30th, 2024.

A native of Kogi State, Admiral Ogohi served as Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff from 1999 to 2003 under President Olusegun Obasanjo.

He was also the first naval officer to reach the rank of four-star admiral during Nigeria’s civilian administration.

“With deep sorrow, I announce the death of Admiral Ibrahim Ogohi (retd), a former Chief of Defence Staff (1999-2003),” said Brigadier General Gusau.

“He passed on in Abuja in the early hours of today.” The Defence spokesman added that further details would be released at a later time.
