Irate youths in Shiya community in Baruten Local Government Area (LGA) of Kwara State over the weekend killed two suspected kidnappers who have recently been terrorising the community.
What went down
The angry youths also allegedly burnt two exotic cars said to belong to one of the kidnappers.
It was gathered that the suspects had lured and kidnapped a resident at a lonely place where they demanded N20 million ransom.
A source in the town told journalists that the shaken victim immediately pleaded for N10 million, explaining that he had spent a lot on his wife who just returned from the Hajj exercise.
The kidnappers were said to have instructed their victim to order his relatives to bring the N10 million to the Sandilo area along the Benin Republic road around 12 midnight last Thursday.
“They asked us to put the money inside a drainage point in front of a filling station in the area,” a family source disclosed.
Unknown to the kidnappers, the victim’s relatives had “marked” the N10 million before depositing it at the designated spot. One of the kidnappers attempted to deposit the money into his bank account at a Point of Sale (POS) on Thursday.
He was, however, rounded up by vigilant security operatives.
What the police said
A police source said that security operatives and the family had earlier contacted POS operators in the neighbourhood, believing they would be the next contact of the kidnappers.
“The family of the victim gave the POS centre the snapped picture of the “marked” money, which led the POS operator to call them to confirm the “marked” money.
“Subsequently, on confirmation, the POS man informed the police station at Shiya town. They responded swiftly and arrested the kidnapper,” the source hinted.

The police source revealed that after interrogation, the man attempting to lodge the money with the POS later led the investigating team to his leader, who had also been arrested and detained at the police station.
Upon this discovery, a source added that irate youths took to the street leading to the Shiya police station and drove away the policemen on duty.
“When they came, they overwhelmed us and forcefully took away the suspects outside and meted out capital punishment on them until they were confirmed dead,” a policeman in the station recalled.
Another senior police officer, on the ground of anonymity, confirmed the incident but added they have commenced full investigations into the incident.
