Police move to arrest suspects

Two commercial sex workers allegedly escaped ritual murder at a popular hotel, along Ebeano Tunnel, Ogui Road, in Enugu, the Enugu State capital.

The women had gone for a hookup with some men. The Guardian learnt that the ladies (names withheld) went into the hotel on Thursday night, July 4, with two men suspected to be organ harvesters.

A viral video seen by The Guardian showed that the ladies’ mouths were gagged, while their legs and hands were tied by the men, who allegedly kept them in a toilet in one of the hotel rooms.

It was said that the suspects discussed and bargained with a supposed client over the phone on which body parts were needed and the pricing.
It was further learnt that the suspects left for a final physical negotiation with the client.

The ladies were said to have been rescued at about 3:00 p.m., on Friday, by hotel staff, who reportedly found bowls, two sharp knives, a cutlass and a cooler in the room.

However, Enugu State Police Command, yesterday, described the narrative as misleading. Spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, said preliminary investigation revealed a case of fraudulent demand for money, not murder or organ harvesting as peddled.

“The ladies, operating as commercial sex workers, made out with the young men on July 3, 2024, in a hotel along Agbani Road, Enugu. They had another appointment the following day and met the suspects in the hotel where the incident occurred.

“At the hotel, the suspects beat and tied up the girls in the toilet after menacingly demanding and obtaining their phones and account details, including their Personal Identification Numbers (PINs).

“They surreptitiously found their way out of the hotel before the victims were rescued, as seen in the video.

“They fraudulently withdrew a cumulative sum of N120,000 from the victims’ accounts,” he said. The police further disclosed that a bag containing two kitchen knives and sportswear left behind by the suspects was recovered, while investigation to fish out the men was ongoing.

The command advised hotel owners and managers to exercise the highest standards of security alertness and ensure that lodgers are properly screened, and their verifiable details obtained before they are accommodated. It also cautioned young ladies against going out with unknown persons, particularly males, under any guise.
