Ejimakor gives reason for IPOB leader’s continued detention

Finland-based Biafran agitator, Simon Ekpa, has warned South East governors, lawmakers and leaders to steer clear of negotiation with the Federal Government for the release of leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Ekpa, the self acclaimed prime minister of Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), in a statement yesterday, said that the ongoing negotiation and appeal made by the region leaders to achieve the release of Kanu lack legitimacy.

This came as South-east governors, groups from the region and the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, recently drummed support for the release of Kanu as a panacea to peace in the region.

Recently, senators from the region met with the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, to demand the release of the IPOB leader.

The federal lawmakers, numbering about 15, were led to the parley by the Senator Representing Abia South, Enyinnaya Abaribe. The meeting between the lawmakers and the AGF came after the South East governors resolved to approach President Bola Tinubu for Kanu’s freedom.

However, BRGIE, headed by Ekpa, warned the governors and leaders against negotiation for a political solution, saying that it is only BRGIE that has the legitimate right to call for the release of Kanu and Biafra’s declaration. He noted that those parading themselves in the name of negotiating for Kanu’s release are sabotaging Biafra’s liberation.

MEANWHILE, Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, has said that the Nigerian Government knows it can’t convict the Biafra agitator with the level of evidence available.

Ejimakor, therefore, noted that it’s time to end the trial of the IPOB leader. He stressed that Kanu was not subjected to judicial trial but trial by ordeal.

Kanu was first arrested in 2015 but was granted bail in 2017 but later fled the country to Europe after a military invasion of his residence in Abia State.

He was later rearrested in Kenya and subjected to an extraordinary rendition back to Nigeria in 2021. Upon his return to Nigeria, the IPOB leader has been through several courts in Nigeria and the United Nations (UN) in a bid to secure his release.
