As part of activities to mark the 2024 Maternal and Child Health, the Rotary Club of Falomo and that of Mushin Metropolitan, in collaboration with PWAN Max and Adept Lessor Limited, on Thursday distributed disease prevention materials to over 100 pregnant women.
Similarly, over 150 nursing mothers and their children got materials under the club’s Maternal/Child Health and Disease Prevention and Treatment projects.
Globally, mothers risk their lives giving birth and millions of children die each year from treatable, preventable causes.
To reduce the preventable situation, members of the Rotary Club of Falomo and Mushin Metropolitan, as well as their collaborators, defied the rain to distribute the materials to over 250 women and children at the secretariat of the Iru/VI Local Council Development Area in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Items distributed include 100 mother-care bags, diapers, baby wipes, baby towels, 100 antiseptics, sanitary pads, detergents, cotton wools, and mosquito nets. Blood pressure and blood sugar tests were carried out, while relevant drugs were distributed.
Speaking during the exercise, the District Governor of Rotary International District 9112, Femi Adenekan, said the idea is to prevent the spread of diseases affecting pregnant women, nursing mothers, and their children.
“Everything we have distributed today is geared towards improving their health and preventing them from contracting diseases. We see it as a way of reducing diseases around us and ensuring we have healthy mothers, children, and nation,” he said.
Explaining further, the Irresistible President of Rotary Club, Falomo, Sandra Ovie, said the two projects, codenamed Maternal and Child Health, and Disease Prevention and Treatment, were aimed at reaching out to the grassroots women who are in dire need of the items.
She said, “We are happy we can touch the lives of over 250 women. We are also glad that the lives of the people who were touched are happy. Rotary Club is all about giving out to people who do not necessarily need to come back to thank us because we enjoy impacting and touching lives.
“So far, we have spent over N3m for this project. We had 100 pregnant women and over 150 women with their children of below five years. In total, they were 250 beneficiaries.”
Her Mushin Metropolitan counterpart, Maryjane Mgbada-Amakwe, said the overall target is to ensure that mothers and children in the benefitting communities are healthy, adding that once that is achieved, the nation will be healthy too.
“We are happy that we have been able to put smiles on the faces of pregnant women and their children. Once they are healthy, the community will be healthy too. What we have given to them is to help prevent diseases,” Mgbada-Amakwe said.
They both commended the members of the clubs for defying the early morning rain to make the exercise a success.
