President Bola Tinubu has sympathised with the victims of the Plateau school building collapse, describing the incident as a huge loss to the country.

The Guardian reports that a two-storey structure of a school in Busa Buji, Jos North Local Government Area in Plateau State, on Friday, July 12, 2024, collapsed.

Following the tragic incident, 22 persons lost their lives and 132 have been hospitalised.

While consoling the victims and the people of Plateau State over the incident, Tinubu, in a statement through his spokesman Ajuri Ngelale, said he received the news of the tragedy “with profound grief.”

“President Tinubu describes the unfortunate incident as a huge loss to the nation, as well as a devastating development – too excruciating to imagine.

“The President condoles with the bereaved families, families of all the victims, and the people and Government of Plateau State.”

Tinubu praised the emergency responders like the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), security agencies, and everyone involved in the search, rescue, and resuscitation efforts.

Also, he assured the people of Plateau State of his fervent support at this difficult time.

In a press release by Plateau State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Musa Ashoms, the state government has directed all major hospitals in Jos to prioritise the treatment of the victims, regardless of documentation or payment.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang has specifically instructed these hospitals to accommodate all those affected by the collapse.

The government emphasised the importance of adhering to established safety standards in building construction.

Citing Executive Order 003, the government urged schools and other facility owners with structural concerns to close their facilities immediately.

The Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB) will conduct inspections to prevent similar incidents in the future while a thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse is underway.
