The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has denied claims that the Federal Government has decided to neglect projects it inherited from previous administrations.

Umahi said although the government inherited major road projects awarded 18, 10, and five years ago, it will review the contracts to ensure that such roads are executed for the benefit of Nigerians.

The minister said this at the meeting with contractors handling road infrastructure projects in Abuja, explaining that President Bola Tinubu has promised to make budgetary appropriations through the National Assembly for their completion.

“We will review the inherited road contracts and work with the Federal Ministries of Finance and National Planning since each of those projects will need N500 billion in the budget. We are being put under pressure for execution,” Umahi said.

“In the last Federal Executive Council, we presented many memos bordering on review and disparity in contracts and cost. We intend to inform foreign and local contractors that there will be no variation in price. Any contractors that the conditions are not favourable can back out.”

On dualization of East-West Road, Lokoja-Benin-Ekpoma, Akwa Ibom -Cross River, Lagos – Calabar, and others, Umahi explained that contractors must work on the new carriageways as well as maintain the old ones pending the completion of the entire road projects.

He therefore stressed that the arrangements would help the Ministry in funding such road construction in tandem with the present economic reality of the country.
