The Acting Director General of the FCT Emergency Management Department, Florence Wenegieme, has disclosed that the four people trapped in the building have been successfully rescued.

Recall that there was a partial collapse of a former hotel-turned-residential apartment building located near Cupid Hotel, Sultan Dasuki Way, Kubwa, Abuja.

Speaking to newsmen at the site of the debris, Florence disclosed that the cause of the collapsed building is still unknown, but with its debris, it is evident that the building was built with substandard building materials.

According to her, there are no deaths recorded and the owner of the building is yet to be identified.

“We received a distress call and we swung into action after activating all the stakeholders. And we now have our heavy-duty equipment. We started the rescue operation.

“We have been able to rescue four people alive. There are no deaths. Two people are in the hospital. Others were unhurt. Well, the rescue operation is still ongoing because it is suspected that there is still one person under the rubble.

“We are not going to call off this rescue operation unless we get to the bottom of the rubbles, to make sure there is nobody trapped under the rubbles of the collapsed building. And that is what has happened so far.

“The cause of the collapse has not been identified. We are still investigating. Because we have the residents of this building here. We only gather that it was formerly a hotel that was converted to about 45 self-contained rooms being rented by residents of Kubwa.

“But from the rubble, you can see that the use of substandard materials is part of it. If you look at the rubbles very well, you see the quantity of cement and quantity of sand, and the quality of iron rods. The owner of the property is yet to be identified,” she said.

Calm has since returned to the site of the collapse as the occupants of the other part of the building that were not affected have evacuated their properties.
