Ile-Ife, often referred to as the cradle of the Yoruba race, holds a significant place in history as the reputed birthplace of life itself. Located in present-day Osun State, the ancient city holds profound historical importance and forms part of the rich culture of the Yoruba people. Here are five must-visit historic sites that offer a glimpse into the city’s illustrious past and its pre-eminent place in the Yoruba culture.

 

1. The Ooni’s palace

Legend has it that this sacred ground marks the spot where the first blacksmith disappeared into the earth, continuing his existence beneath the surface. Known also as Ile Oduduwa, in honour of the mythical progenitor of the Yoruba race, the Ooni of Ife’s palace dates back to ancient times, its roots intertwining with the city’s history as early as 500 BC.

A symbol of power, authority, and cultural pride, the palace perfectly illustrates the enduring heritage of Ile-Ife. The current Ooni, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, is welcoming, allowing visitors to witness the beauty of the ancient palace.

 

2. IFE museum

The Ife Museum is a treasure trove of ancient artefacts and artworks. It houses some of the finest examples of Ife bronze and terracotta sculptures, dating back to the 12th century.

These masterpieces highlight the advanced metallurgical skills and artistic excellence of the Yoruba civilisation. A visit to the museum offers an educational journey through time, providing a window into the rich cultural heritage of Ife.

 

3. Oranmiyan staff

Would you not like to visit the spot where the famous Oranmiyan staff stands to this day? Opa Oranyan, the Oranmiyan staff, is an erected long staff that represents the cradle of the Yoruba race. Also. known as Oranyan, Oranmiyan is credited with founding the Oyo Empire, one of the most powerful and influential Yoruba states. Historians believe this nearly six-metre-tall carved granite column, which is quite tall in comparison to the average human height served as both a walking stick and a symbol of Oranmiyan’s royalty.

4. Oduduwa’s shrine

Known today as Oduduwa World Temple and Grove, the site marks the mythical landing point of Oduduwa, the legendary progenitor of the Yoruba race, via a chain from the heavens to found Ile-Ife. It is also his final resting place. The shrine is beautifully decorated with ancient relics, pottery works, and calabashes with intricate designs and colours that shimmer in the sunlight. Visitors are greeted by a statue believed to depict Oduduwa with the chain and staff, alongside a map of Africa carved out in stone.

5. Olokun festival

In Yoruba tradition, the chief Olokun shrine in the Ilode quarter of Ile Ife is revered as the place where Olokun, the goddess who gathered all the earth’s waters during creation, resides. The site is a focal point during the Olokun Festival and attracts visitors and Olokun worshippers from around the world. When next you visit Ife, this is one place you should never miss. The Olokun Festival, which is held every year, offers a captivating glimpse into the Yoruba cultural heritage.
