Shannen Doherty, the actress who rose to fame with her roles in “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Charmed,” has died at the age of 53 after a long battle with breast cancer. Her publicist, Leslie Sloane, confirmed the news in a statement to CNN.
“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease,” Sloane said. “The devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”
Shannen Doherty’s career of notable roles
Shannen Doherty rose to fame with her portrayal of Heather Duke in the 1989 classic film, “Heathers.” She also acted as Brenda Walsh in “Beverly Hills, 90210,” a role she played from 1990 to 1994. The series, a staple of 90s television, followed the interesting lives of teenagers in the affluent Beverly Hills community. Doherty built a fan base and became a household name through the series’ popularity.
In 1998, she took on another role as Prue Halliwell in “Charmed,” a show about three sisters who are powerful witches. Doherty starred in the series until 2001.

A health battle
Doherty’s public battle with breast cancer began in 2015. After going into remission in 2017, she revealed in 2020 that her cancer had returned and was at stage 4. In June 2023, Doherty shared that the cancer had spread to her brain.
Throughout her illness, Doherty informed the public about her condition, using her platform to raise awareness about living with cancer. She documented her journey in her podcast “Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty.” The most recent episode of the podcast was on July 8, 2024.
Additionally, Doherty revealed her financial plans to ensure stability for herself and her family.
“I guess I’m in a mindset now of I need to make as much money as humanly possible in the next two years, bank it, put it with my investment place, build that so that A, I don’t have to work and I only work when I want to. I can also go on a lot more vacations. Then also when I pass away my mom’s got a nice little nest egg and I don’t have to worry about her.” she said earlier this month.
Rise to fame
Born in Memphis, Tennessee, but moved to Los Angeles as a child, she began her acting career in the role of Jenny Wilder on the film series “Little House on the Prairie.” She went on to act in different projects, including the series “Our House” and the 1985 film “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” Her roles in “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Charmed” are some of the most popular works that she’ll be remembered for.
