Plans for a new town in East London have been submitted for approval to Barking and Dagenham council.
The plans are backed by the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, as part of his partnership with L&Q housing association.
Sadiq Khan’s partnership is called Barking Riverside Ltd
Barking Riverside Ltd have submitted the plans for the new town, with space for up to 20,000 new homes.
The plans for the new town in East London cover 443 acres of brownfield land on the Thames bank, including homes capable of housing up to 50,000 people.
The land formerly held the Barking power station.
The plans currently include 13,046 new homes
35% of the homes in the plans will be affordable homes, or 20% below market price.
The plans also include two large parks, covering 50 acres and 19 acres.
There are already more than 6,000 residents in the area after smaller schemes have built 2,700 homes there, and there is permission for more than 4,000 more already granted.
Sadiq Khan said about the new town in East London: “Barking Riverside is a prime example of a new town in London, a pioneering partnership delivering thousands of new homes for Londoners.
“It’s an inspiring model of how to fix our housing crisis, with new public transport connections, schools, green spaces and a town centre making this a blueprint for how the next generation of English new towns could work.
“I’m determined to do everything in my power to continue boosting homebuilding across London, as part of my plan to build a fairer, more prosperous city for all Londoners.”
