Since 1980, Pride in the Job has been central to NHBC’s purpose to raise standards in house building. Now, 45 years later, the competition remains the most highly regarded in the house-building industry and a prestigious benchmark for exceptional site managers
Throughout the decades, Pride in the Job has rewarded excellence and showcased best practice. Over the years, the competition has shone a well-deserved light on thousands of excellent site managers dedicated to raising standards in house building, all of whom have gone on to deliver much-needed, high-quality new homes across the UK.
How Pride in the Job works
Pride in the Job is truly accessible to all as every site manager with a site registered for an NHBC Buildmark warranty is automatically entered. The competition covers England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man, and is open to businesses of all sizes with no entry forms or fees.
The Pride in the Job competition cycle takes place over 18 months with judging beginning in July each year. It involves meticulous scoring, verification and thousands of site inspections to uncover our Quality Award-winning site managers.
Quality Award winners are announced in June with Regional Events commencing every September running until the end of November. The Regional Award winners from every region then compete to win the national Supreme Awards in January.
For the initial nominations, sites are judged by the local NHBC building inspector and their inspection manager. For the Quality Award, this involves the local NHBC regional director and an inspection manager.
At the Seal of Excellence and Regional Awards level, the local regional director, another regional director and an external judge will inspect the sites. For the Supreme Awards, two regional directors and an external judge will determine the ultimate winners.
Winning site managers demonstrate incredible dedication, passion, commitment and leadership to produce homes of exceptional quality. The judges look for those special qualities that turn a good site manager into a truly great one.
Build a legacy, make your mark
Not only has Pride in the Job been helping to raise standards in the house-building industry for more than four decades, but these awards also have an impact far into the future.
Winning site managers often have an assistant site manager working with them who benefits from their mentorship. Those assistants consistently progress through their own careers, eventually becoming site managers themselves and sharing what they have learned with the next generation. They will also try to improve on what they have seen and so the entire industry benefits from continuous improvement and advancements through shared knowledge and skills.

And, alongside encouraging site managers to focus on quality, the competition also fosters new and interesting perspectives on how and why the house-building industry does things. This can lead to developments in practices and innovations which help the industry continue to evolve and set the new improved standard.
So, whether you are targeting your first ever Quality Award, pushing for a Seal of Excellence or achieving a coveted Supreme Award, Pride in the Job is still the competition that all site managers want to win.
The Quality Award winners 2025
450 site managers have won a Quality Award in this year’s Pride in the Job competition. As the competition celebrates its 45th year, these award winners join the thousands who have won before them, demonstrating the same dedication and passion for building homes of the highest quality.
Steve Wood, CEO at NHBC, said: “Congratulations to all the winners. They have demonstrated the dedication, passion and leadership skills necessary to deliver new homes to exacting construction quality standards.
“Thousands of outstanding site managers have made their mark on the industry in the 45 years Pride in the Job has been running. This continued focus on excellence is vital to support the government’s 1.5m new homes target and to ensure that all housing is built to the quality owners and occupiers should expect.”
