Nationwide Hire, a construction equipment hiring company, has filed a notice of its intention to appoint administrators
Based in Hampshire, the company employs 55 people but generated a pre-tax loss of £1m for the year to September 2024.
The company has been in business since 1995 and works with more than 900 suppliers providing kit for sites across the country.
Construction administrations are on the up
In July last year, analysis by Shakespeare Martineau found that of the 783 businesses that entered administration in H1 2025, 10% were construction businesses.
This means 79 construction businesses filed for administration in the first six months of 2025.
Andy Taylor, partner and head of restructuring at Shakespeare Martineau, said: “While the year-on-year drop in administrations is worthy of note, the overall picture for business remains challenging.
“These figures, while worthy of note, do not detract from the fact that the trading environment for many businesses remains highly challenging. Many companies are surviving through short-term fixes, but without sustained growth, improved consumer confidence and better access to funding, there are still choppy waters to navigate.”
Construction remains one of the most difficult businesses to run
Last month, data from Witan Solicitors found that 41.6% of construction businesses have failed in the last five years.
The data covers January 2021 to December 2025, and all of these businesses either fell into administration or were liquidated or dissolved.
In this period, 257,087 businesses opened, and 107,086 of these closed.
Qarrar Somji, solicitor-advocate and director at Witan Solicitors, explained: “The construction industry is under sustained and growing pressure, and there are very few signs that things will ease in the short term.
“In the past few years, we’ve even seen the collapse of well-known contractors such as ISG. So understandably, things may feel pretty bleak for firms that have just entered the market.
“Rising costs, stretched supply chains, skills shortages and increasingly complex regulation are crippling the industry.”
