Many of the UK’s major contractors and public sector frameworks have established some of the strongest health and safety records in construction, driven by robust standards, rigorous processes and a long-term commitment to workforce wellbeing.
However, despite this progress, construction remains one of the UK’s higher-risk industries overall. Industry research suggests that serious incidents continue to occur across the sector, highlighting the need for continued collaboration, innovation and investment in safer ways of working.
The industry is increasingly implementing new processes, including technology, to increase safety on site, with the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) stating that digital skills and digital solutions are key in achieving safer outcomes.
Our experience has shown that the biggest safety improvements come not from individual innovations alone, but through collaboration and the right communication to build trust, iron out operational issues, and adapt technology to suit a specific project environment.
Creating safer sites through smarter planning
Usually, the most effective way to improve safety is to remove hazardous activities altogether. For example, at Temple Quarter, a project procured through SCF and delivered by Sir Robert McAlpine, significant elements of the project were manufactured offsite and brought onto site only when needed. This reduced the risk of working at height, manual handling activities, and congestion on site.
Offsite construction required early engagement between designers, contractors and supply chain partners to ensure components could be produced accurately, transported safely and installed efficiently. Detailed design coordination was essential to provide the certainty needed for fabrication, while collaboration across the project team helped identify and resolve potential issues before materials reached site. The result was a safer and more efficient delivery approach, demonstrating that the greatest safety innovations are often those that remove hazards altogether. Technology and modern methods of construction can play a powerful role, but only when projects create the collaborative foundations that allow them to succeed.
Looking beyond the innovation
The construction industry often celebrates the latest technologies transforming site safety, from robotics and automation to AI-powered monitoring systems. While these innovations undoubtedly have a role to play, their success depends on the quality of planning and coordination that takes place behind the scenes.
The autonomous drilling technology at Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus provides a compelling example of this. It was programmed to create approximately 22,000 drill holes, reducing operatives’ exposure to repetitive tasks, manual strain and potential safety risks associated with traditional drilling methods.
Before this could be deployed, the project team needed detailed digital models and a high level of design certainty to identify exactly where every hole needed to be drilled. This required close collaboration between designers, engineers and delivery teams to ensure information was accurate, coordinated and shared across the project. In many ways, the real innovation was not the drill, but the collective effort that provided the confidence for automation to be used safely and effectively.
As the industry continues to adopt new technologies, Temple Quarter demonstrates that digital tools can help remove hazards from site, but they can only do so when projects invest in the planning, data quality and collaboration needed to support them.
Creating safer sites through connected project information
On a complex city-centre project such as Temple Quarter, safety extends beyond the site boundary and depends on constant coordination between multiple organisations. Information about road closures, delivery schedules, vehicle movements and neighbouring works needs to be shared quickly and accurately to minimise risk. While much of this coordination ultimately comes down to strong relationships, digital tools and shared project information play an increasingly important role in giving stakeholders a common view of activity across the project.
At Temple Quarter, collaboration between Network Rail, Bristol City Council, WECA and neighbouring contractors helped ensure that construction activity was carefully coordinated through a dedicated traffic forum, reducing the potential for conflicts and safety risks within a constrained urban environment. The lesson for the industry is clear – technology can support safer decision-making, but only when organisations are willing to share information and work together.
Looking ahead
While technology will continue to play a critical role in improving site safety, to truly address it, a collaborative approach is key.
Through better integration between clients, contractors, designers and supply chains, shared safety goals can be communicated, while early risk checks can enable teams to spot problems in the design stage before building begins.
