A new £15.2 million community health centre in Belper, Derbyshire, has been designed with sustainability at its core, incorporating renewable energy, responsible material sourcing and BREEAM standards
Delivered by construction contractor Henry Brothers for Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust, the new facility replaces the former Belper Clinic on the Babington Hospital site on Derby Road.
Designed by architects Race Cottam Associates, the centre brings existing outpatient and clinical services at Babington Hospital together in a purpose-built facility.
Designing for a lower environmental impact
Sustainability was a key consideration throughout the design and construction of the new community health centre.
The building has been constructed to BREEAM standards and features photovoltaic panels across the roof, allowing the facility to generate renewable energy from solar power.
The project team also sought to reduce the environmental impact associated with construction materials. Locally sourced and recycled materials from demolished buildings were used where possible, while timber incorporated into the project was sourced from certified suppliers.
A modern healthcare environment
The centre has been designed to provide a modern, flexible environment for a range of community healthcare services.
It includes 15 consulting rooms, six treatment rooms and a health education group room, alongside supporting facilities. Services provided from the new centre include community nursing, phlebotomy, midwifery clinics, podiatry, physiotherapy, continence advisory services, and speech and language therapy.
Project team
Henry Brothers delivered the project for Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust following procurement through the Pagabo Major Construction Works Framework.
The wider project team included Capita as project manager, Eastwood Consulting Engineers as civil and structural engineer, and EP Consulting as mechanical and electrical engineers.
