Alex Norris has been named the new building safety minister after Rushanara Ali gave up the brief amid controversy earlier this month

Alex Norris now steps into the role after formerly being appointed the minister for local growth and democracy.

Rushanara Ali gave up the building safety minister’s role and brief after receiving criticism from attending a conference sponsored by a firm related to the Grenfell disaster.

Alex Norris has experience in building safety

Before the Labour Government came to power, Norris served as the shadow fire minister.

During a debate on building safety and resilience last month, Norris said: “We will demand responsibility for building safety—responsibility from this government and responsibility across the industry”.

He continued, saying that had the Chamber known that “we would still be in the same situation seven years later, I think we would have considered that we had failed. That is very much the case, and this Government intend to address the failure”.
