The Rivers State House of Assembly faction, led by Martin Amaewhule, has passed a bill to amend the Rivers State Education (Return of Schools) Law No. 1 of 2005.

The passage of the bill occurred during the 2nd Legislative Sitting of the Second Session of the 10th Assembly yesterday.  The amendment aims to bring significant changes to the state’s education sector, aligning it with modern demands and requirements.

During the debate on the report of the House Committee on Education, lawmakers voiced their backing for the bill, emphasising the need for the government to reclaim control of schools for more effective management.

They noted that returning schools to government control would enable them to better cater for the educational needs of girls in Asari Toru Local Council and beyond, ultimately promoting girls’ education and empowerment in the region.

Amaewhule praised the sponsor of the bill, Tekenari Granville, member representing Asari-Toru State Constituency II, while stating that the reason behind the legislation is commendable.

According to Amaewhule, the bill aims to correct a historical mistake by reclaiming Kalabari Girls High School, Buguma, from the church, returning it to the government, while ensuring more effective management and better educational outcomes for students.

He further elaborated that the bill’s primary objective is to enable the state government to assume administrative control of the school, ensuring that it fulfills its intended purpose.
