White House defends Biden’s health in fiery briefing

President Joe Biden yesterday made clear he would not step aside from the presidential race and sought to reassure his top donors and fund-raisers, a day after some House members privately said he should drop out.

The President issued defiant responses to high-ranking lawmakers calling for him to step aside: “If any of these guys don’t think I should run, run against me,” he said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” shortly after telling congressional Democrats that he was committed to staying in the race. “Go ahead, announce for president. Challenge me at the convention.”

He took four questions from donors during an afternoon call, according to several people who listened in, and said he planned to “attack, attack attack” ex-President Donald Trump as part of his strategic pivot.

Biden is facing what could be the most crucial week of his candidacy, as he contends with crumbling support from Democratic lawmakers and mounting fears of a rout by Trump and his followers in November’s races for the White House.

After more than an hour, an occasionally tense and combative White House press briefing came to an end. As a storm cloud hangs over Biden’s reelection campaign, reporters asked questions of Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and national security spokesman John Kirby.
