The 10 political parties participating in the July 13, 2024 council elections in Delta State have signed a peace accord at the headquarters of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC).

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP), other political parties and chairmanship candidates took part in the exercise in the presence of law enforcement agencies and Inter-party Advisory Council (IPAC).

Speaking at the occasion, DSIEC Chairman, Dr. Jerry Agbaike, tasked participating political parties to conduct themselves with decorum and avoid verbal altercations that bother on hate speech, blackmail and vendetta.

He said:  “So far, we are impressed with the conduct of the 10 participating political parties, and this is not surprising because Deltans are generally peaceful. Peace is an integral part of our culture.

“We are, however, not unmindful of the need to translate this enviable peace quality into paper, which is the essence of this peace accord.”

Meanwhile, the Delta State Orientation Bureau, yesterday, urged the youths not to make themselves available, as political thugs or paid trouble makers before, during and after the council elections in the state.

The Bureau Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, who spoke with journalists in Asaba on the need to conduct a credible election in the state, advised the youths to shun violence, but direct their energies towards productive ventures that would advance their good ambitions.

He also appealed to political gladiators and members of the fourth estate of the realm, and those monitoring the exercise not to relent in their efforts in promoting democratic values, hard work, patriotism and honesty at all times.
