Group Engages APC, PDP, LP Guber Candidates

As the September 21, 2024, governorship election in Edo State draws nearer, the South East South South Professionals of Nigeria (SESSPN) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to demonstrate the highest level of integrity in the conduct of the poll.

Addressing a press conference in Lagos, recently, the group charged the commission to use the opportunity provided by the Edo governorship election to redeem its image after a dismal performance during the 2023 general election.

According to the President of the group, Mr. Hannibal Uwaifo, misconducts committed by INEC and some criminally minded politicians and their cronies during the 2023 general election were still in the public space and have disillusioned many Nigerians.

“The SESSPN hereby calls on INEC to redeem its image by conducting a very transparent Election in Edo State.

“SESSPN has taken notice of the unfortunate statements of President Bola Tinubu about giving Edo State to his party.”

The videos of the president seen with his party supporters boasting about giving Edo State back to his party is sad and has already sent tongues wagging about the intentions of the president considering the massive rigging and manipulations that took place during the 2023 general elections.

“We believe that INEC as an independent body must hold its grounds and conduct a transparent election where the votes of the People counts.

“Politicians in Edo State are urged to behave themselves and see the election as an opportunity to advance the interest of Edo State, not their personal interest or that of their political parties,” he said.

Meanwhile, a socio -political group in Edo, Owan Conscience, will today hold a debate christened “Political Dialogue with Owan Nation,” which will feature the candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Monday Okpebholo; Labour Party (LP), Olumide Akpata and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Asue Ighodalo, in the election.

The event will be held in Sabongida-Ora, the headquarters of Owan West Local Government of the state at 10am. Speaking ahead of the event, the chairman of the organising committee, Richard Ofen-Imu, expressed the group’s readiness to host the candidates of the three major political parties in a question and answer session, saying all arrangements had been perfected to ensure a hitch-free ceremony.

On the rationale behind the event, Ofen-Imu explained that the political event is intended to be an interactive engagement between Owan people and the governorship candidates, noting that the occasion will offer the people the opportunity to draw the attention of the candidates to the plight of Owan people and draw commitments from them.
