An online exhibition of potential designs for the memorial have been launched by the government
On Wednesday, an online showcase of five concepts for the Queen’s memorial plans were launched.
The plans are for the chosen memorial site in St James’s Park.
The designs are the shortlist of competitors
The designers were given a brief to design a memorial concept that celebrates the late Queen’s life, service, and give the public a space for reflection. The final design is set to be a national landmark to remember the UK’s longest reigning monarch.
The online exhibition will gather opinions and feedback from the public, which will be used to determine the winner later this year, in summer. The plans are also to be assessed against wider criteria, such as placemaking, visitor experience, and value for money.
The competition for the Queen Elizabeth II Memorial is being run by Malcolm Reading Consultants, who selected teams based on relevant experience and skills of their multi-disciplinary team.
The Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee, established by the government and Royal Household in 2023, is being chaired by Lord Janvrin, the Queen’s former private secretary. The committee oversees the project.
This year is a big year for memorials, as the shortlist has been announced for a Grenfell memorial as well.

The winner of the competition will see further development and receive planning permission. The chosen team will then work with the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee, select an artist, and design a figurative representation of the Queen.
Chair of the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee, Lord Janvrin, said: “Queen Elizabeth II’s extraordinary life of service profoundly touched countless individuals, and she was a figure of great respect and admiration. Memories of her long reign are still fresh for so many of us, and we need to capture the essence of them for future generations.
“In recognition of this, it is only fitting that we invite the public to express their views on these design concepts.
“We are delighted to be working with some of the best architects, artists and designers in the world to produce a landmark memorial of outstanding beauty that celebrates and honours the life of Queen Elizabeth II.”
The online exhibition is open to the public and they are being asked to provide their feedback on each. All comments will be collated into a feedback report which will advise the Selection Panel and help determine the winning design.
The exhibition, as well as further information on the competition, can be found at the website here.
