Darwen Tower, located near where the new 1500 new Blackburn homes will be located

The LK Group is set to complete a ground investigation over 214 acres in an appointment by Darwen Council for a new housing development.

1,500 new Blackburn homes are set to begin construction on Whalley Old Road after pre-construction finishes in the next couple of weeks.

The housing scheme has investment from several parties, and will be a part of Darwen Council’s ‘Local Plan,’ which aims to build 7,000 new homes and create 5,000 new jobs by 2037.

Houses will be on the market by 2026

The LK Group is responsible for the assurance that the foundations on which the houses will be built are stable and that any potential hazards or contaminations are accounted for, and prevented or mitigated.

Colin Crompton, director at LK Group, said: “It’s fantastic to have been successful with this tender. As a Bury-based company, the project is very much on our doorstep and playing a role in delivering 1,500 much-needed homes to the local area gives our team a real sense of pride.

“Blackburn is also seeing substantial investment in its town centre and surrounding areas right now, as the council aims to deliver its £250M masterplan. As regeneration specialists, there is nothing we love more than supporting an ambitious local authority, and we look forward to playing a crucial role in creating a thriving new residential community in the town.”

1,500 new Blackburn homes contributing to the 1.5m homes target

There are several larger projects across the UK that are working to achieve the government’s 1.5m new homes target.

For example, in June, Homes England recently acquired Ripon Barracks, released from the Ministry of Defence due to its lack of use, as a site for 1,300 new homes. This development will see natural green spaces, a new primary school, a community centre, and a retail area.

This land was unlocked for use through the Public Land Taskforce, comprising members of the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government, and HM Treasury.

At the time, Deputy prime minister and secretary for housing, Angela Rayner, said: “Unlocking underused public land like Ripon Barracks is exactly the kind of practical action people want to see, and a crucial part of tackling the housing crisis we face.

“By working with Homes England as a key delivery partner, we’re making a real difference for people in North Yorkshire by creating vibrant communities and driving economic growth. This marks another step forward in our mission to build 1.5 million homes in our Plan for Change.”
