Airedale General Hospital, in Keighley, West Yorkshire, has had the construction firm appointed to oversee its construction
The Airedale NHS Foundation Trust has appointed Gleeds to oversee the Airedale Hospital project.
The Trust employs more than 3,000 people for care around Yorkshire and East Lancashire.
Airedale Hospital will provide further care for the community
The Airedale NHS Foundation Trust provides acute, elective, specialist, and community care for more than 200,000 people across both regions.
Gleeds has been appointed to deliver a new hospital facility that is state-of-the-art, and will have associated amenities to help meet evolving patient needs. The hospital is being delivered as a part of the New Hospital Programme (NHP).
Gleeds will therefore work with the Trust and representatives of the NHP, as well as a design team and contractors to deliver the hospital. The project will be more sustainable, building the new facility on the existing site and allowing as much care to continue as possible during construction.
The existing hospital was built with Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete(RAAC), and so the replacement of the building is urgent. The project will utilise digital construction technologies, modern methods of construction.
“Having the opportunity to secure the future of Airedale Hospital is a real privilege”
Alastair Stewart, programme director for Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are delighted to have Gleeds onboard as our project manager partner for our Securing the Future programme. Securing the Future represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build a new state-of-the-art Airedale General Hospital that our patients, staff and community deserve.”
Commenting on the appointment, Andrew McNulty, Gleeds’ UK Head of Healthcare, added: “Gleeds has extensive experience in delivering complex health projects and we have seen first-hand the enormously positive impact they can have on communities. Having overseen the delivery of similar large-scale projects across the UK in recent years, we’re looking forward to sharing best practice and supporting our client and their surrounding community throughout this project.”
Gleeds’ director responsible for the project, John Walker went on to say: “Airedale NHS Foundation Trust does incredible work, and this ambitious scheme represents an opportunity to further transform the health offer for patients in the long term, improving care and ensuring that its facilities are future proofed. As someone who lives locally, having the opportunity to secure the future of Airedale Hospital is a real privilege and I look forward to collaborating with the project team as we get works underway.”
The New Hospitals Programme was originally announced in 2019, however, under the new government many of the promised projects under the programme have been delayed due to financial, labour, and time constraints.
