Material Evolution has been recognised at the 2025 Constructing Excellence Awards for its work in ultra-low carbon construction

Material Evolution (Mevo) has been named the National Innovation Award winner at the 2025 Constructing Excellence Awards, for its work in ultra-low carbon construction

After securing the regional Constructing Excellence Wales Innovation Award earlier this year, the judges praised Mevo’s bold, game-changing approach to the production of ultra-low carbon cement, in terms of both its process and the development of its facility.

The process involves using AI, ML and alkali fusion technology to combine industrial byproducts with no heat, thereby reducing CO2 emissions by 85% compared to Portland cement, producing a high performance, sustainable binder called MevoCem.

Last October, the business also opened its Mevo A1 Production Facility in Wales – the UK’s largest ultra-low carbon cement plant able to produce MevoCem at a commercial scale – a significant turning point for the industry.

“This award shows the industry is ready to embrace ultra-low carbon solutions”

Dr Liz Gilligan, CEO and co-founder at Material Evolution, said: “Winning the Constructing Excellence National Innovation Award is a huge milestone for Material Evolution and a real validation of everything our team has worked towards. It’s a recognition not just of our technology, but of the scale of change we’re driving in the construction sector.

“What excites me most is that this award shows the industry is ready to embrace ultra-low carbon solutions – it proves that sustainable, scalable, high-performance cement is not just possible, it’s happening today.

“For our team, for our partners and for the construction industry, this is a moment to celebrate, but also a reminder of the responsibility we have to keep pushing the boundaries of sustainable innovation.”
