Newmarket Community Hospital has had plans submitted for a new endoscopy and paediatric audiology building
The plans for an MMC hospital extension have been submitted by Medical Architecture.
The plans feature a new building near the Community Diagnostic Centre, designed to prioritise a welcoming environment, comfort, and privacy.
Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) is considered throughout the building
The building will feature several features to protect patient privacy and dignity, such as using individual patient pods both for preparation and recovery, and also negating the need for segregated spaces for gender, for example.
It will be built in a loop with space for circulation and waiting areas around the perimeter, ensuring a good amount of daylight and views to the outside in all areas.
The main waiting area will have a secluded wild garden outside in a space that the building surrounds, featuring mature trees, and the building itself will be created from natural materials, chosen to both complement neighbouring buildings in Newmarket.
The whole design takes MMC into account, allowing for future adaptations and making design decisions such as the windows being located at regular intervals in a standard pattern, designed to allow internal spaces to be planned with minimal effort.
Ruairi Reeves, director at Medical Architecture, said: “In the current context of growing investment in community and neighbourhood healthcare, we’ve worked hard with the Trust and the design team to create a flexible community asset that offers long-term value. We are now making great progress with Morgan Sindall in taking the project forward.”
Matthew Clarke, project delivery manager for the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The expansion of diagnostic services at the Newmarket Community Hospital will provide our communities living in, and around Newmarket, with quicker access to the services they need. With planning now being considered, we look forward to getting on with the project, so our patients get the care they need, closer to where they live.”
The Pre-Manufactured Value is already to standard
The project was initially announced in December last year, when Morgan Sindall was appointed to undertake the project.
Costing £25m, a Pre-Manufactured Value (PMV) assessment was undertaken, and confirmed that the PMV is 75%, where the NHS requires at least 70%. Digital tools will be utilised in the construction, including ACC, Gamma AR, Occulo, and Edocs.
The facility will also be all-electric, with air source heat pumps used for heating and hot water, as well as PV panels on the roof. Embodied carbon savings will be tracked via the CarboniCa digital carbon calculation tool, and the construction of the building itself will be diesel-free.
