Trains 45 Personnel, CSOs
The Director General, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Prof. Fatima Waziri-Azi, has reiterated the significance of accurate data collection and global partnership in effectively combating human trafficking.

She stated this on Friday in Abuja at the end of a five-day capacity training for 45 officers of the agency and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) working in the field of counter trafficking of humans in Nigeria.

Waziri-Azi pointed out that the training of NAPTIP officers and partner CSOs was aimed at better implementation of the National Action Plan on Trafficking in Persons, better monitoring and evaluation of progress made.

“With the training, officers will have enhanced abilities to churn out reliable data to track the progress of the implementation of the national action plan on human trafficking in Nigeria 2022-2026.”

“It is also expected that when they go back to their various departments, commands and liaison offices, they will be able to step down the training to their other colleagues,” she explained.

Responding to concerns on Nigeria’s counter trafficking efforts with regards to global trends, the DG said: “Nigeria has one of the best counter trafficking efforts in the whole of Africa as highlighted in the 2023 Global Slavery Report. The report states that Nigeria has the strongest response when it has to do with human trafficking across Africa.”

She noted that in terms of legal framework, Nigeria has it; stressing that in terms of operational structure, Nigeria has NAPTIP, a one-stop shop that has enforcement, prosecutorial powers and protective mandate to its target beneficiaries.

“If you look at our prosecutorial record cumulatively, we have secured 674 convictions. We secured 80 in 2022, we had 66 last year and as of today we have secured 34 convictions and counting,” she added.
