Blocwork, a joint venture partnership between Network Rail and bloc, has been chosen to deliver homes in Cambridge North

Cambridge North will be a new area being delivered by the Network Rail Property Company, which will be launched later this year.

Blocwork will deliver more than 400 homes in the area.

The Network Rail property company will build around the Cambridge North Station

Cambridge North will serve as an expansion around Cambridge North Station, with plans for regeneration that will replace the old freight sidings, a new Novotel Hotel, and more than 75% of the One Cambridge Square office building having been built already.

Consent was given for the masterplan of the second phase last year, which includes 425 residential units and 53,700 sqm of commercial space.

Blocwork has been chosen to bring this residential sector to reality.

The neighbourhood is planned to be ‘ultra-low car use’, being two and a half miles away from Cambridge City Centre, fully linked by public transport and cycling routes, and also have improvements made to cycleways.

A green space in the form of a wild park will be at the centre of the community.

“A fantastic opportunity”

Sven Topel, CEO at Brookgate said: “The residential quarter is a vital part of the vision for creating an open and accessible mixed-use neighbourhood at Cambridge North. Alongside our partners, we look forward to working with Network Rail Property and bloc as they partner to deliver high-quality homes in a sustainable location that supports the continued growth of Cambridge. The vision for the new live / work community at Cambridge North will provide an attractive and vibrant gateway from the station to surrounding areas.”

Robin Dobson, group property director at Network Rail, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to unlock disused railway land and create a new residential quarter adjacent to Cambridge North station.  As the largest owner of brownfield land in Great Britain, we are able to unlock strategically important sites such as this as we continue to play a central role in delivering sustainable housing to drive future growth. We look forward to working with all neighbours and key stakeholders such as The Crown Estate to deliver a new neighbourhood which acts as a catalyst to adjacent sites.”

Another recent announcement stated that Network Rail will be working closely with the Ministry of Defence to open up unused or disused land and increase the number of property developments through the new Network Rail property company.
