The Information Management Initiative team at Digital Construction Week, representing nima's call for volunteers

Nima, the information management body formerly known as the UK BIM Alliance, has issued a call for volunteers to support its future growth

The organisation said that 90%-95% of its day-to-day work activity is undertaken by volunteers.

Some are supported by their employers – Nima supporters and patrons – to commit their time and share expertise. Others volunteer in their spare time or, if self-employed, take time out of their working days to support Nima, buildingSMART UK & Ireland and the Information Management Initiative.

Nima’s activities

Formed in 2016 as the UK BIM Alliance, nima incorporates bSUKI, the UK and Ireland chapter of buildingSMART International and not-for-profit consultancy the GIIG.

With the British Standards Institution, the organisation also maintains the IMF Framework (formerly the UK BIM Framework), the overarching approach to implementing BIM in the UK and a repository of guidance on data and information management best practices.

In partnership with the Construction Leadership Council, Nima is also developing the Information Management Initiative.

Nima activities are managed through various volunteer groupings, including:

  • Networks: Groups of volunteers active in particular industry disciplines or in particular regions.
  • Affiliated organisations: Professional institutions and industry trade associations aligned with Nima’s aims of better information management.
  • Ambassadors: Individuals who promote Nima, the UK BIM Framework and the standards and resources that support and enable it.
  • Nima’s chair and vice-chairs: Individuals who volunteer considerable time and expertise to help manage Nima activities.

Volunteering for Nima’s core team

Nima’s chair and the vice-chair team regularly consult with members and volunteers in developing the organisation’s overall strategy but practical delivery of that strategy is dependent upon individuals’ voluntary commitment of time and expertise.

Nima is inviting volunteers from all levels and disciplines across the built and managed environment, from the UK and internationally, to support all key areas of nima and buildingSMART activities – including membership and project management, communication and events, education and upskilling, communities and stakeholder engagement, standards and guidance.
