Nollywood blockbuster film “Lakatabu,” featuring star actor Odunlade Adekola, has amassed N126.4 million at Nigerian cinemas in less than four weeks.

The announcement was made by Filmoneng, a leading West African movie distribution company known for hits like “A Tribe Called Judah” and “Omo Ghetto The Saga.” The company reported that “Lakatabu,” which premiered on June 21, 2024, quickly became one of the year’s most successful Nollywood releases.

According to the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), “Lakatabu” was the highest-grossing Nollywood film from June 21 to June 27, 2024, earning nearly N65 million during that week alone. Its strong start was highlighted by Nairametrics, which noted that the film earned N47 million in its opening weekend with over 11,000 admissions, marking the third-highest opening of 2024.

“Lakatabu” stars Odunlade Adekola, one of Nigeria’s highest-grossing actors of 2023. His performance in the film, which follows an armed robber with magical powers, has been a significant draw for audiences. Adekola’s previous works, such as “Orisa,” which grossed N127 million, showcase his consistent box office appeal and versatility in both comedic and dramatic roles.

The film’s ensemble cast includes notable actors Adebayo Salami, Adedimeji Lateef, and Akin Lewis. “Lakatabu” explores the character’s journey as he terrorises communities and faces threats from rivals, creating a narrative filled with suspense and cultural resonance.

The success of “Lakatabu” is part of a broader trend where epic and indigenous films are gaining traction in Nigerian cinemas. Films like Kayode Kasum’s “Ajosepo,” which grossed over N200 million, highlight the shift in audience preferences towards local storytelling.
