Porsche Consulting has partnered with ABB Robotics to work on technology for modular housing manufacturing
The global construction industry has faced a surge in demand for new housing, complicated by strict environmental regulations, labour shortages, complicated supply chain dynamics, material sourcing difficulties, and mounting project costs.
Many countries, such as Germany, expect housing shortages in 35 cities by 2030, while the United Kingdom already has a significant housing deficit.
Exploring new technology for modular housing manufacturing
In response, the construction industry is exploring new approaches to home construction, including new modular construction techniques and transitioning to factory-based production instead of on-site construction. The collaboration between Porsche Consulting and ABB Robotics was created for this purpose.
The two organisations hope their combined capabilities will improve modular housing manufacturing efficiency, safety, and sustainability throughout the housing production sector.
“We see a compelling opportunity to revolutionise the construction of homes by automating the manufacturing of modular components,” commented Marc Segura, president of ABB Robotics.
“Enhanced and intelligent automation serves as a solution to the pervasive labour shortages, and this partnership promises increased productivity, greater customisation, and the promotion of sustainable, efficient construction practices,” he continued.
Construction robotics can improve safety and efficiency
The integration of robotics in construction offers significant advantages, including cost savings, continuous 24/7 operation, consistent task automation, enhanced safety through precision navigation, and adaptability with AI algorithms. Although initial costs may be high, the long-term benefits make the investment worthwhile.
“By integrating ABB’s leading robotic solutions with Porsche Consulting’s proficiency in the strategic planning and operation of state-of-the-art factories, we aspire to be catalysts of change within the construction industry,” said Porsche chairman, Eberhard Weiblen.
“Highly automated factory-based construction assures higher quality and more cost-effective housing and fosters safer and more conducive working conditions. Construction accounts for approximately 30% of workplace injuries, with a fourfold higher risk of fatal accidents compared to other sectors,” he concluded.
