Residents have fled three communities submerged by flood in Uyo metropolis The affected communities are: Nung Obio Enang along stadium road; Urua Ekpa axis; and Afaha Oku villages.

The Guardian learnt that many buildings in Nung Obio Enang community were submerged following a heavy downpour, which forced residents to flee their homes.

The community is located near L & L Hotel, along Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. More than 32 houses were submerged in the area. One of the victims, Mr Etop Effiong, described the flood as a perennial problem that had confronted residents in the last 12 years. He said the flooding began after the poor construction of Stadium Road during the administration of former governor, Godswill Akpabio.

“During heavy rainfall and throughout the rainy season, we have to quit our houses to stay with neighbours for one or two weeks before the water dries up. That has been our predicament for many years,” he said.

The wife of the victim, Eka Esther, who was visibly crying, said the tricycle her husband used for commercial purposes had been destroyed by the flood.

Another resident, Edem Udotong, who lives behind the community’s primary school, said: “This morning, I rushed to rescue a little girl who fell inside the flood. Who knows what would have happened if I was not there?”

The youth president of the community, Mr Nsikak Eddie, called on Governor Umo Eno to embark on a flood control project in the area. In a letter, titled ‘Save Our Souls’, by the council of Afaha Oku villages, signed by Eteidung Emmanuel Eka and secretary, Sipol Cosmos Ebong, the community leaders lamented that flood had threatened the foundation of the village and that many buildings had collapsed. They appealed to the governor to award a contract for the rehabilitation of affected roads.
