The RTPI five year plan will seek to enhance the profession

The Royal Town Planning Institute has announced their new plan, titled Empower 2030, determined to aid the planning profession, and grow membership and its value

The RTPI five year plan builds on the corporate strategy put in place in 2020.

The new plan features five core elements around the three pillars of Purpose, Practice, and People.

Setting sustainability and social value strategic targets

The plan places strategic importance on combating climate change and enhancing benefits to nature, and aims to lead by example. Focus will also be placed on improving diversity and inclusion within the workplace.

The five core elements of the strategy are:

  • Combating the climate and nature emergencies
  • Improving diversity and inclusion within the planning profession
  • Progressing the digital first strategy
  • Building on the ‘One Institute’ approach
  • Applying the principles of good governance

Dr Victoria Hills, chief executive of the RTPI, said: “Our strategic plan enables our institute to elevate the profile of planning, support planners, grow our membership, and deliver exceptional value. It also empowers our members to enhance their skills and advance their careers.

“The Strategic Plan puts combatting the climate and nature emergencies and improving diversity and inclusion with the planning profession at the heart of the plan. The RTPI seeks to lead by example, to be the world’s leading professional planning body.”

Meeta Kaur, RTPI chair of the board of trustees, said: “In a rapidly changing world where the role of planners is more critical than ever, the RTPI must continue to evolve and improve in support of our profession and our members.

“This plan sets out an ambitious route map for the five years ahead. We thank everyone who contributed their time and ideas, and we very much welcome your support in delivering our plan.”

RTPI are seeking opinions on the future of the profession

The Institute is currently running a State of the Profession survey to update its report and tackle current challenges, including housing shortages and climate change.

All eligible planners within RTPI have received the survey, with questions about employment, background, career plans, skills, and wellbeing, with particularly emphasis on the opinions from senior planning officials within local planning authorities.

The current research will build upon previous research from 2023, which produced a report that reads: “Two decades into the 21st century, societies around the world face enormous challenges – climate change, pandemics, changing patterns of work, biodiversity collapse, infrastructure planning – that in one way or another have implications for the built environment. In the United Kingdom, national planning systems are intended as tools to sustainably mediate between the state, civil society and the built environment sector as they tackle these challenges. Running an effective and efficient planning system requires a healthy, diverse and vibrant planning profession.”
