The Scottish Plant Owners Association (SPOA) has unveiled a comprehensive plan to support its members in embracing digital transformation, following insights gathered at Bauma 2025

The SPOA’s action plan is designed to accelerate the digital adoption of key technologies—such as AI-powered fleet management, autonomous plant, machine learning, and cloud-based systems—among its members, with a focus on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Speaking about the journey towards digital transformation, Gail McEwen, vice president of the SPOA, said: “Bauma 2025 showcased a clear and accelerating shift toward digitalisation, automation and sustainability. From fully autonomous construction machinery and electric-powered plant to AI-driven fleet management tools and immersive training simulators, the show reinforced that the future of our industry is not just coming, it is already here.

“Conversations with manufacturers, innovators and global industry leaders revealed a common narrative: smart technology is not optional but inevitable. The challenge now lies in how quickly and effectively businesses, particularly SMEs, can adapt and adopt and the SPOA is committed to supporting our members with this.”

Key components of the SPOA digital transformation plan:

Sector-focused academic research

In partnership with academic institutions, the SPOA will produce targeted research on digital technologies in plant operations, including case studies and guidance on data integration, AI implementation, and cloud infrastructure.

Development of a digital integration framework

Members will receive support in creating a bespoke digital roadmap that covers systems integration, workforce training, and technology procurement—aligned with their business goals. The SPOA will also assist in identifying funding, grants, and partnership opportunities.

Digital training and upskilling initiatives

The SPOA will launch a series of online webinars, simulator-based training sessions, and workshops to help plant operators upskill in key digital competencies. These sessions will reflect technologies exhibited at Bauma 2025 and real-world applications.

Collaborative industry partnerships

To encourage innovation and accelerate adoption, the SPOA will explore partnerships with OEMs, software providers, and government bodies to foster collaboration and industry-wide knowledge sharing.

Pilot projects and case study development

Pilot programmes will allow members to test new digital systems in controlled environments. The SPOA will document and publish results to demonstrate best practices, ROI, and practical challenges in digital adoption.

Continuous monitoring of industry trends

To help members stay competitive, the SPOA will provide regular updates on digital construction trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory developments. Member forums and networking events will support knowledge exchange.

Driving digital innovation in the plant sector

This initiative positions the SPOA as a leading voice in the digital modernisation of the UK construction plant sector. By delivering structured support and practical resources, the association aims to reduce barriers to digital transformation and ensure long-term resilience for its members.
