St. Gregory’s College, Obalende, Lagos, has emerged winner of this year’s Helmbridge Science Challenge. It defeated The SMAC College, Coker, and WhiteSands School, Lekki, who emerged and second runners-up, to lift the trophy for the second consecutive year.

The Helmbridge Science Challenge, a flagship initiative of the Educational Cooperation Society, has impacted boys’ education in Lagos for over four decades.

The competition is a six-week quiz contest, where students are tested in key subjects-Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and General Knowledge. Each team member faces questions individually, showcasing their strengths and contributing to their team’s overall performance.

The competition is focused on helping young academics embrace the analytically diverse nature of the sciences, and brew a spirit of healthy competition and sportsmanship.

Director, Helmbridge Study Centre, Wilfred Dieke, said multiple students, each year, benefited from the initiative, which has continuously strived to ensure that contestants become well-rounded academics, and build key connections.

He said: “At Helmbridge, we get to hear how a regular student, in trying to make it to the team representing his school, forced himself to work harder, and study beyond what they are being taught in class. At that stage, they are creating patterns in their minds to recall important information that will be vital in the future.

Dieke added that the organisation ensures that there are major improvements at each edition of the challenge, citing participants’ feedback as a key influence.

“The Helmbridge Science Challenge helps to bring students to a ground where they can challenge themselves, and push themselves to be greater. I have participated in this competition twice, and I have seen its results. It helps to build students, and give them an initiative for growth. We competed with a lot of very good schools along the way, but to be here at the end, emerging victorious is a good feeling,”

A participant from St Gregory’s College, Kanayo Ekwueme, said the challenge propel students to study harder and develop patterns of thinking that benefit them in the future.

Ekwueme said it offers them the platform to go head-to-head with their counterparts from other top educational institutions. A teacher from St Gregory College, Mr Babayode Samuel, praised the resilience of his school’s representatives, while commending the Helmbridge Study Centre for always raising the bar for participating students.

“One key thing about this competition is that it helped our students in the past to adequately prepare for their external examinations. The organisers are committed to improving the quality of the challenge every year, and I always expect the students to prepare effectively,” Samuel said.

On his part, Matthew Ibiwoye from SMAC College said: “The Helmbridge Science Challenge has run for over four decades. Some of our students who participated in this challenge in the past, have gone on to become graduates, engineers, doctors, attaining success in their respective fields of study.”
