It’s almost the end of the academic year, and the summer holidays are around the corner. Summer holidays present a special opportunity to ignite your child’s creativity, and build key capacities through engagement in a variety of extracurricular activities.

Beyond activities that keep your child engaged academically, it is important to explore their special interests and give them the right amount of exposure, and the upcoming Summer Holidays present the perfect opportunity.

Here are some ways you and your child can make the most out of the holiday period. First, enroll your child in an appropriate summer school programme, it does not necessarily have to be organised at your child’s school. Narrow your targets to summer schools which offer the chance of engagement in several extracurricular programmes that can improve their cognitive abilities such as chess, writing and debate clubs.

Allow your child to express their creativity through arts and crafts. This can help your ward with finding a means of expression, and can help to improve their cultural awareness. It also helps to give your child a profound feeling of accomplishment and esteem, upon completing their pieces. Engaging in art and craft activities could help your child find a means of escape even beyond the summer holidays, when they can fully unleash their creative side. Prioritise arts and crafts on your child’s summer wish list.

Sports are a very important activity to consider for your child during the summer this year. Sporting activities brew a strong feeling of self-esteem, and harbour a healthy spirit of competition. Encourage your child to develop interest in a sport, it could be football, basketball, table tennis, etc, and get them on a team where they have the opportunity to properly develop and refine their skills.

It’s never too early to introduce your child to the rapidly advancing world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Ensuring your child has a very rewarding summer requires a lot of your personal commitment. Take out time to conduct personal research on

STEM bootcamps, that seek to engage the inquisitive nature of your child’s mind from a very early age, while offering them practical experience. This early exposure could set them on the journey to a career path, or even a scientific discovery of their own.

Equally, you should encourage your child to read books – articles, novels, journals. Books that improve their vocabulary, and improve their literacy. Purchase books for your ward, and attach minor rewards to successfully completing each book and sharing lessons learnt. You can make it even more exciting for your ward by joining them in reading a book, and sharing your ideas.

Whatever ideas you choose to adopt this summer holidays, ensure you have your child’s input and interests.
