The University of the Built Environment has changed its name after 106 years

The University College of Estate Management has officially changed its name to better reflect its role in the industry

The change to the University of the Built Environment marks the institute’s 106th year of operation.

The name is intended to better reflect the school’s role in education within the built environment.

Over 4,000 students attend the university

The university offers professional degrees and apprenticeships in built environment-related disciplines, including construction, real estate, planning, sustainability, and architecture.

They also conduct research into the state of the industry.

Last year, the university conducted research into the skills shortage and found green or sustainability skills to be the most lacking. Their research found that of the study respondents, 77% felt that their organisation would lose their competitive edge without sustainability skills.

Furthermore, 88% said that these skills are relevant to every role in the sector, and that there is a shortage of these skills. 73% said that recruiting people with the right sustainability skills is a challenge.

Earlier this year, the university also merged with the London School of Architecture in order to combine resources, expertise, and networks.

At the time of the merger, Ashley Wheaton, vice chancellor of UCEM, said: “This merger reflects our deep commitment to nurturing diverse pathways into the professions that shape our cities and communities. The LSA’s pioneering model aligns powerfully with our mission, and we are excited about the future as we work together to be the centre of excellence for built environment education.”

“We are committed to research, partnerships, and collaboration”

A statement from the University of the Built Environment reads: “The University’s vision is to be the centre of excellence for built environment education. This new name reinforces that ambition and highlights our expanded scope. The University now has over 4000 students and offers professional degrees and apprenticeships across disciplines such as construction, real estate, planning, sustainability and architecture. In addition to the industries we serve, we are committed to research, partnerships and collaboration, as recently demonstrated by the merger with The London School of Architecture.

“As an institution, they remain grounded in their Royal Charter and deeply connected to their history. With a new name, they look ahead — committed to shaping the future of the built environment.

“This is more than a name change; it is a statement of intent. It marks a bold new chapter for their community and network. In embracing this new identity, they reaffirm their mission to lead, innovate, and inspire across every aspect of the built environment.”
