Following concerns over dilapidating state of housing estates across the states, estate surveyors and valuers have pledged to introduce maintenance guidelines to sustain the estates.

Lagos State governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and its Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai through the Permanent Secretary, Abdulhafiz Toriola had pleaded with the institution recently to develop a template that will ensure proper and effective maintenance of the structures, as well as facilities in various estates in Lagos and across the country.

NIESV President, Victor Alonge, who spoke at the second statutory meeting of the council, said the initiative would influence job creation and economic development. “We will no longer operate from the back seat as government policies have direct impact on the dynamics of the real estate business, as well as play a pivotal role in shaping societies and economies, by providing frameworks for regulation, service, and governance.

“Henceforth, we must play critical role in influencing, formulation and implementation of policies, which have direct bearing on our profession. We must do all we have to do, and with all influence, capability and energy we can make our profession great, acceptable and known by all in Nigeria,” he said

According to him, the council will initiate strategies and develop the roadmap to deliver the aims and objectives of the institution, and review developments. “We have critical role and services to the nation, and our strategic position as drivers of the economy require creativity.”

Alonge noted that the economic situation has been challenging, and seen low level of activities, “when there is low or no activities, we don’t earn fees, and don’t forget that as professionals, estate surveyors and valuers inclusive live on fees. That doesn’t mean that in the midst of the challenges, we can’t farewell. Within the challenges lies opportunities we can take on, but we must be creative, help government and clients create jobs,” he added.

He called for creativity and proactive measures among council members to navigate the current economic challenges, adding that their role as drivers of economic development is not debatable, neither is it overstated.
