The Workplace Technology Conference in Derby will demonstrate how smart building technology can create a more appealing workspace-and draw staff back into the office
The exhibition at the Workplace Technology Conference will demonstrate how human-centric LED lighting, movement sensors and other smart building technology can upgrade the working experience.
Hosted by city IT and Scenariio, the conference aims to bring together landlords, architects, fit-out experts and company owners to explore how to reinvigorate the workplace experience.
The event is the first of its kind organised by Scenariio, whose smart building clients include Gymshark, Severn Trent Water and Tarmac.
Post-pandemic, working from home has become a contentious topic
Working from home became the norm for many during COVID, and a significant number of the population continue to do so.
There have been some concerns raised by employers over the potential impact of this on productivity, with high-profile names such as Apple, Amazon and JP Morgan Chase urging their employees to come back to the office.
Simultaneously, rising energy costs and staff retention is leading to increased scrutiny of the energy performance of office buildings.
If staff are to invest their time in communicating and engaging in office culture-especially younger generations entering the workforce- sustainability is a growing priority.
Smart building tech modernising lighting and ventilation will be on show
Delegates to the Working Technology Conference can visit trade stands to learn about innovations in smart building tech, such as:
Circadian, or biodynamic, lighting – a technique which was pioneered by NASA and uses indoor lighting to mimic the natural circle of daylight
Sensors which can monitor everything from human movement to air temperature, humidity, air quality and CO2 levels – and even when bins need emptying – giving facilities managers up-to-date information on performance levels
Power over Ethernet, which uses data cables to provide electricity to run lights and CCTV cameras.
A number of companies have already signed up to appear, including event partners CommScope and smartengine by wtec.
Guest speakers will also be talking about issues such as the importance of technology planning, putting technology at the heart of sustainability and how to encourage staff to come back to the office.

Taking place on September 21 2023 at the Chocolate Factory, the home of the Bustler Market street food venue, in Siddals Road, entry to the event will be free.
The exhibition starts at 10am and will be followed at 5pm by an evening at Bustler Market, including karaoke, arcade games and a silent disco.
