Morgan Sindall Property Services (MSPS) has launched their Apprenticeship Academy, aimed at bringing young people into the property maintenance and construction industry
Developed by MSPS’s in-house social value team, the Apprenticeship Academy will be led by social value officer Luke Culling.
Designed to complement MSPS’s existing training and employment programmes, the Apprenticeship Academy will recruit annual cohorts of apprentices over the summer, when students will have completed their studies and be considering the next steps of their careers.
The cohort system will encourage more collaboration and allow the apprentices to benefit from peer support.
Pre-employment weeks will showcase the Apprenticeship Academy to candidates
Pre-employment weeks will be held across the country and virtually to allow as many potential candidates to see the range of career options within the sector and MSPS- including trades-based, commercial, customer service, communications and design roles.
In the first of these events, 51 prospective apprentices undertook practical, workplace-based sessions such as team building, problem solving and logic activities, and our social value team provided employability support including CV writing and mentoring to prepare candidates for interviews.
On the last few days of the week, interviews were held to shortlist the most promising candidates. The successful apprentices will start around mid-August, giving the apprentices time to enrol with colleges or training providers before beginning their formal training in September.
Support will be offered to unsuccessful candidates as well
For those who didn’t make the shortlist, the pre-employment week will still be a positive entry on their CV, and MSPS will be looking at ways to support their applications for future roles either with the company.
This will include help to improve how they complete job applications and to support their job search.
Director Paul Reader, who started his career as an apprentice, said: “It’s crucial that we attract and retain a diverse range of talent across the business, and that we support people throughout their career path with us.
“The Academy will provide a structured route to sustainable employment for young people whilst also enabling MSPS to ‘grow its own’ workforce to help fill the sector-wide skills shortage.”
