Morgan Sindall Construction has completed the construction of Millside Spencer Academy in Nottinghamshire, providing much-needed school spaces for the local community
The project was a collaboration between Nottinghamshire County Council and Arc Partnership, with procurement acquired through SCAPE. Arc Partnership oversaw project design, cost management, and construction oversight.
The school was built on former farmland along Rempstone Road, and the school is operated by The Spencer Academies Trust. 315 primary schools and 26 nursery places have been offered to the locals. The school is conveniently located within the recent David Wilson Homes housing development, The Skylarks.
BIM played a pivotal role during the project’s design and execution phases, allowing the design team to create 3D models and ensure an on-time handover.
Local SME’s benefited from the Millside Spencer Academy project
The project exceeded targets for local subcontractor engagement, achieving 54% local labour and spending within a 20-mile radius. Collaboration with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) reached a remarkable 99%, and £50,000 was spent on social enterprises.
Social value was an important part of the projects. Initiatives included university visits for undergraduate quantity surveyors, guest lectures, support for local food banks, and assistance with the school’s forest school setup. Ukrainian refugees found employment opportunities on-site through the social enterprise Radiant Cleaners.
The project generated a social value return of 46.5%, reinvesting over £4.5m within the local community. Morgan Sindall used CarboniCa, an in-house digital carbon reduction tool to reduce decarbonisation and hit the company’s net zero carbon objectives.

Morgan Sindall also used low-carbon fly ash-based cement, resulting in savings of 117 tonnes of carbon, equivalent to the annual emissions of 43.3 heated homes.
Morgan Sindall was selected by Arc Partnership to deliver Millside Spencer Academy, building on their successful collaborations, including Bingham Primary School in August 2022 and Rosecliffe Spencer Academy in May 2021.
This is the fourth school completed by Morgan Sindall for The Spencer Academies Trust, following Castleward Spencer Academy, Highfields Spencer Academy, and Rosecliffe Spencer Academy.
“We are thrilled to hand over Millside Spencer Academy to the community, a project which has not only delivered vital pupil places for the local area but also inspiring and modern learning environments which is integral to learning and development,” said Richard Fielding, area director at Morgan Sindall.
“Working with Arc Partnership gave us a brilliant product design to deliver, and we hope that through the build itself, and also through social value initiatives which have seen us give back to the local community through education, local spending, and carbon reduction, we can all be proud of the outcomes we have achieved,” he concluded.
