A fire stopping collar designed to offer practical advantages to installers out on site and greater flexibility to project specifiers has been added to the FSi Promat range
The PROMASTOP®-FC MD is an easy-to-install, multi-diameter collar to seal combustible pipe penetrations through walls or floors in the event of a fire. Featuring an intumescent seal that triggers expansion at approximately 190 degrees, the collar can resist smoke and flames for up to 120 minutes.
It has been successfully tested to EN 1366-3 U/U to ensure the seal holds even if both ends of the pipe are open. This capping configuration supports applications for services that are vented to atmosphere, such as rainwater pipes, drainage or empty unsealed sleeves.
A product with a U/U classification also covers U/C (Uncapped/Capped), C/U (Capped/Uncapped), and C/C (Capped/Capped) scenarios, in line with the EN1366-3:2021 test standard.
Benefits of PROMASTOP®-FC MD
Open-ended pipe configurations can allow hot gases and flames to travel through the service, creating a more severe condition for the seal. Testing to U/U ensures the seal performs under the most demanding conditions.
The PROMASTOP®-FC MD is suitable for multiple pipe diameters up to 160mm and can be easily cut to length using scissors, reducing the need for numerous individual collars and different collar sizes. It can be applied to plastic pipe penetrations in flexible and rigid walls with 100mm minimum thickness, as well as rigid floors with 150mm minimum thickness.
The collar has achieved fire resistance rating EI120 U/U for use on PP and PE plastic pipes and multiple pipes in bundles in rigid and flexible walls. It has also been tested to provide up to 120 minutes of protection for PP, PE, PVC and multiple pipe bundles in rigid floors, including those fire stopped with FSi Promat’s Stopseal® Batt systems.
David Roulstone, national commercial and marketing manager at FSi Promat, said: “Utilising the testing and development expertise of our sister company Promat, we have introduced the PROMASTOP®-FC MD to our range. Not only does the U/U classification support compliance and performance, but it also delivers cost-effectiveness and functionality, allowing for on-site adjustments and quick and easy installation for a wide range of applications, such as flexible and rigid walls.
“FSi Promat already offers a range of sealing products designed to reinstate the fire resistance performance of floor and wall constructions where apertures exist. With the addition of the PROMASTOP®-FC MD we can offer a system that our partners can be confident will maintain performance in real-world applications.”
Meeting fire performance and safety standards
Approved Document B of the Building Regulations in England provides detailed guidance on passive fire protection, requiring that any opening in a fire stopping element such as a wall, for services like plastic pipes, must be properly sealed to maintain a fire-resistant barrier. This helps to delay the spread of fire and smoke.
The PROMASTOP®-FC MD solution effectively closes off pipes in the case of fire, with the intumescent technology expanding to seal the hole caused when plastic pipes melt.
In addition to use with various composite pipes in walls and floors, the PROMASTOP®-FC MD can be applied to approved pipe systems with acoustic installation, pipes approved in corner details of floors, and pipes with approved coupling.
“As part of the Etex group of companies, we are focused on offering a range of complementary solutions so that our customers can benefit from specialist knowledge and expertise from across the portfolio,” said David.
“By adding this cut-to-size fire collar to the FSi Promat range, complementing products such as our sealants, compounds and batt and mastic solutions, we are extending our offer to customers so they can be confident in meeting performance and safety standards.”
