New CIH committee members are being sought

New members are being sought for two of the Chartered Institute of Housing’s (CIH) governing board sub-committees

The selected CIH committee members will join the audit and risk committee and the governance, ethics, remuneration and nominations committee.

These committees cover the governance structure, overseeing the CIH’s management and leadership.

Setting the course for the future

The two committees’ decisions affect the strategic direction of the organisation, mapping out priorities, ensuring good performance, and managing risk, accountability, viability, and sustainability.

The candidates chosen to join these committees will therefore support the board and trustees in working to business objectives.

Sue Leppington, director of finance, commercial and corporate services at CIH, said: “The purpose of the Chartered Institute of Housing is simple. We want to provide everyone involved in housing with the skills, support and knowledge they need to be the best they can. We also want to shape housing and community agendas.

“To achieve these things, we want to ensure that CIH is an accountable, strategic, modern, inclusive and dynamic organisation that is not only fit for purpose but also is prepared to face future challenges. The Audit and Risk and Governance, Ethics, Remuneration and Nominations committees are an important part of this, helping us to deliver on our key business objectives.

“If you are an effective decision maker and passionate about professionalism and are committed to excellent governance and the role housing can play in the future of our communities, then we want to hear from you.”

Applications are open until Friday 31 July. More information can be found here.

Improving safety in housing

Earlier this month, the Institute published their response to a consultation being held on proposed reforms to Approved Document B, regarding fire safety specifically. This document outlines the minimum fire safety standards for construction and alteration of buildings in England and Wales.

The proposed changes to the document are:

  • Implement important clarifications and technical changes to the guidance
  • Consolidate guidance for designing building work on existing buildings
  • Introduce a threshold on the use of combustible elements of structure, over which Approved Document B guidance should not be applied
  • Revise and update guidance on external wall systems and balconies and review the scope of the ban on combustible materials in, and on, external walls and specified attachments
  • Recommend providing evacuation lifts in residential buildings above 18m and clarify the guidance for non-residential buildings
  • Update terminology on ‘sheltered housing’, introducing the new term ‘specialised housing’ in its place and including provisions for extended alarm coverage in these premises
  • Introduce updated guidance on roofs, including new provisions for incorporating solar photovoltaic (PV) panels
  • Increase the structural fire resistance rating of open-sided car parks

The CIH published their response after submitting it. In their response, they write: “Our main recommendation outlined throughout our response is that better guidance is required. The guidance in the proposals is not sufficient for both provider understanding and communication with residents, and we believe this should be strengthened for the proposals to be effective.”
