Amanda Long has been appointed as the new deputy chief of the Construction Products Association (CPA)
Current CPA deputy chief executive Jeff May is set to retire, and Amanda Long has been chosen as his replacement on a part-time basis.
Amanda currently serves as the chief executive of CPI Ltd, and will continue to do so alongside her new role.
The construction sector is changing
Due to her experience, Amanda brings expertise in building safety, decarbonisation, sustainability, and supply chain challenges, as well as knowledge of the regulatory, commercial, and political landscape.
This is also reflected in her role at CPI Ltd. This non-profit body proposes and campaigns for a Code for Construction Product Information, which Amanda has played a major role in establishing. She has also been a leader on the Building a Safer Future Charter and on creating the Considerate Constructors Scheme.
In addition, Amanda has over 25 years of experience in senior executive roles at national and international organisations across the construction and built environment sectors. She has served as the director general of Consumers International, representing consumer protection bodies worldwide.
“Keen to build on those foundations”
CPA chief executive, Peter Caplehorn, said: “Amanda brings a wealth of experience from across membership organisations, with a strong track record of delivering value for members and driving growth. Her understanding of how to engage and support a range of memberships will be a significant asset to the Association.”
Adam Turk, chair of the CPA and chief executive of Siderise Group Ltd, said: “Amanda’s appointment comes at a critical time for the construction industry, and her strong leadership will be a major asset as the sector navigates the challenges ahead. Her experience in driving change, raising standards and operating across complex stakeholder environments will further strengthen the CPA’s voice and impact.”
Amanda Long added: “I am very much looking forward to working with CPA members and stakeholders to continue driving progress on the key issues facing the industry. Additionally, I am keen to build on those foundations and support the industry on the many opportunities to deliver growth and innovation as we move forward.”
Policy is changing regarding construction products, as the consultation on the Construction Products Reform whitepaper opened at the end of March, with a list of proposed reforms to maintain quality in construction products.
The white paper states: “The green paper made clear that current construction products regulations in the UK do not foster a sufficient focus on safety. This derives from their basis in the European Union’s (EU) 2011 Construction Products Regulation (the EU-CPR 2011), which was principally conceived to remove technical barriers to the trade of construction products in the European single market. This means that where a product standard exists under UK regulations, it could be completely unrelated to safety (for example, a focus on energy efficiency instead).”
