The UK construction industry is facing a defining moment in its journey towards net zero. Significant attention has rightly been given to carbon emissions, but intense scrutiny must also be made to the materials that are being used to construct the buildings themselves if net zero targets are to be met effectively.
The industry’s reliance on plastic reaches further than many realise. From pipework and insulation to modern air conditioning units, ventilation systems and electrical infrastructure, plastic is deeply embedded within construction despite long term net-zero efforts encouraging more eco-friendly materials.
The plastic waste crisis
Recent revelations from the Environmental Investigations Agency surrounding the UK’s plastic waste exports have brought this issue into sharper focus. The investigation traced thousands of tonnes of UK plastic waste sent for recycling in Adana, Türkiye, revealing how exported plastic is contributing to pollution in one of the country’s most important agricultural regions.
This only further goes to highlight the complex and often hidden environmental consequences associated with the disposal of plastic waste, raising important questions about the lifecycle impact of the materials we choose to use every day.
While the blame can’t solely fall onto one sector, the construction industry accounts for 23% of all plastic consumed in the UK, and 40% of plastic waste from UK construction sites is sent straight to landfill. Many construction companies have taken the smart steps towards putting sustainability targets in place, but the clock is already ticking against protecting the environment for future generations by ensuring buildings are constructed using the right materials.
The challenge is that much of the plastic used in construction is designed due to ease of use and apparent cost saving measures, but this doesn’t consider the lack of a clear end-of-life pathway.
The illusion of cost savings
Plastic pipes originally become a popular choice in construction due to their lower upfront cost compared to materials like copper. Since the end of World War II, plastic has been praised as a saving grace due to its cheap cost and versatility, which at the time did offer temporary solutions in a period of rebuilding. However, we have since learned much more about the material and its harmful consequences.
These initial cost and time savings can come at a much higher price in terms of both long-term sustainability and safety.
Plastic products have also been proven to deteriorate over time, contribute to the spread of microplastics, and are often unable to match the durability, longevity and fire resistance of more traditional construction materials.
The case for copper
Unlike many plastic-based products, metals offer exceptional circularity. For example, copper, can be recycled repeatedly without any loss of performance or quality. The same is true for aluminium and steel. This means the material installed in a building today can be recovered, reprocessed and reused decades later while retaining its full value.
In fact, around 65% of all copper that has ever been mined is still in circulation. Embodying the circulation economy in action, copper is a proven valuable asset throughout multiple lifecycles.
This is where copper continues to demonstrate its value. For generations, copper has been relied upon throughout the built environment for plumbing, heating, electrical systems, roofing and renewable energy technologies. Its combination of durability, reliability and sustainability makes it uniquely suited to the demands of modern construction.
By prioritising materials that can remain in circulation for decades while maintaining their performance, the construction industry can significantly reduce embodied carbon and ensure the built environment is prepared for the sustainability challenges of the future.
The future
As the industry seeks to deliver more sustainable, resilient and future-ready buildings, copper offers a proven solution that balances environmental responsibility, operational performance and occupant safety.
Whether supporting next-generation heating systems such as heat pumps, or the growing demand for air conditioning and refrigeration systems during increasingly frequent UK heatwaves, copper remains an essential material for efficient thermal transfer and long-term system reliability.
As construction companies continue to reassess the environmental impact of the materials they specify, the focus must go beyond short-term cost considerations and towards whole-life sustainability. Materials such as copper, aluminium and steel provide a pathway to lower waste, greater resource efficiency and a more circular economy. If the UK construction sector is serious about meeting its net-zero commitments, these proven and endlessly recyclable materials must play a central role in shaping the buildings of tomorrow.
